Torstein Horgmo Talks Shredbots, Setbacks and the 06 Season

It's been eight weeks since GoPro athlete and slopestyle legend Torstein Horgmo has touched his board. Mainly because a broken back isn't an injury someone just bounces back from, but it did give him plenty of time to focus on his crew's recently released film Shredtopia.

Shredtopia follows Torstein and fellow Shredbots riders all over the Southern Hemisphere for their second full-length feature film, and there is no limit to the insane GoPro footage captured along the way.

We use the camera almost every day we go out snowboarding, and there's always something fun to film, something cool to capture just the simplicity of it, Torstein shared with the GoPro crew during a recent rooftop catchup in San Diego. It's perfect for us, it's perfect for Shredbots for anybody filming edits really just on the fly. It seems like it's made for snowboarding.

But a recording GoPro also happened to capture the most cringeworthy moment of the entire film when Torstein bails on a trick and it's obvious he's not walking away unscathed.

That terrifying moment, being ushered away in a toboggan and confirming he can still feel his legs is laid out there for everyone to see. Sure ripping in Australia with the Shredbots a group that is constantly growing and pushing boundaries is what led to this setback, but it also gave Torstein the perfect platform to share the truth behind his snowboarding story. It's not just all perfect pow.

I put the bail out there pretty much as soon as it happened, he said. It's a little bit taboo maybe in snowboarding, but injuries happen. We wanted to put it in the movie and let people see some of the stuff we got through.

Learning the reality behind snowboarding is exactly what Torstein said intrigued him as a young snowboarder growing up, and sharing what he calls real snowboarding is what drives Shredbots today whether it's charging the backcountry or hitting the streets.

From graduating the triple cork into a quad cork, Torstein says the progression of snowboarding, especially in contests today is pretty insane. If the contests are where these moves get attention, then they're born when riders push each other to go bigger just for fun.

When we go out and film, we're basically just filming each other doing what we feel like is the most fun, he says. A contest is live, and it's a different type of pressure. Filming edits and doing a movie is just completely different. It just helps balance everything out, and it's something I really enjoy doing. And from the feedback were getting, the kids are really enjoying it too, so it motivates us to keep inspiring.

And now that his brace is off, he's feeling good to go out and have some more boundary-pushing fun.

I mean, it happens; injuries happen, but I'm recovering well, Torstein shared.

He says his sights are set on making it to X Games Aspen. And if that doesn't get you pumped, stay tuned because the X Games are heading to this Norweigan's backyard of Oslo, Norway, in February 2016.
