L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables heads to HBO Europe

HBO Europe to Partner with Breakthrough Entertainment to Bring Iconic Literary Character to 14 European Countries

TORONTO, CANADA (June 16, 2017) Award winning studio Breakthrough Entertainment has struck a deal with HBO Europe that will bring the first installment of the L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables' trilogy into homes across fourteen countries in Central Europe through HBO's premium pay television service.

The film will be available to families in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

This film revival of the evergreen brand first debuted on YTV in Canada, then went on to screen with PBS for American audiences, ITV in the UK, and ARD in Germany. The film has also enjoyed theatrical debuts in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables is produced by Breakthrough Entertainment, in association with Corus Entertainment's YTV and the author's granddaughter, Kate Macdonald Butler, who served as Executive Producer for the film.

This recent adaptation, which was filmed in Canada, is based on the original script by Susan Coyne and directed by John Kent Harrison. The film stars critically acclaimed actor Martin Sheen who is best known for his role as the President in the long running series The West Wing and most recently the Netflix original Frankie and Grace who portrays Matthew Cuthbert, the brother of Marilla Cuthbert, who are the two siblings whom Anne is sent to.

Additional main cast members include Ella Ballentine as Anne Shirley, Canadian actress Sara Botsford as Marilla Cuthbert and features Julia Lalonde, Kate Hennig, Stefani Kimber, Drew Haytaoglu, Kyle Gatehouse and Linda Kash.

L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables, which is based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic novel, tells the story of an innocent young orphan who is accidentally placed in the care of Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, a brother/sister duo who sought to adopt a boy to help around the farm. While initially hesitant of Anne, they eventually grow fond of her upbeat positivity and curious spirit.

First published in 1908, Anne of Green Gables remains a timeless work of Canadian literature and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. The eight-novel series is set in Prince Edward Island and has attracted millions of readers of all ages, who are inspired by the spirited redhead Anne Shirley.
