The recent 48 Hour Film Project in Cape Town, which was hotly contested by a number of highly professional film industry production companies, saw producers Deryck Broom and Richard Le Sueurs popular short thriller Jack of Hearts walking off with the second highest number of awards in the competition.
The short about a group of people playing a game for their lives, which picked up awards for best use of the genre, sound design, score and best ensemble cast, also received compliments at the screenings for cinematography, editing and directing. The film also received a nomination for production design.
Actors in order of appearance included Gary Green, Gift Gwe, Grant Ross, Candice DArcy, Rory Berry, Sabine Palfi and Leon Clingman.
According to co-writer and co-producer Deryck Broom, who also directed the film, the 48 hour production went very smoothly due to the actors and crew were highly motivated by the script. It was a real pity that we had to drop so many good lines from the final cut due to the timing restrictions of the competition , said Deryck, whose production company Trilogy Creative Studios recently worked on the new Science Channel series The Unexplained Files.
A general response at the screenings was that the characters were interesting and the story was compelling, and audience members indicated that they would be keen to see a feature length version of the film at the cinema.
Co-writer and producer Richard Le Sueur explained that the feature length script for Jack of Hearts, which would explore the backgrounds of the players and what motivated them to play, is being written with a joint local and international release in mind. We can certainly produce the film on a reasonable budget locally, and I believe that the response we received already suggests that a feature has the potential to see a good return-on-investment for financiers.
The Jack of Hearts short film will likely be entered in other film festivals in order to gauge a wider audience response and explore distribution options for the feature version.
