For some years, clever engineers have accommodated on-air talent's nomadic tendencies, allowing them to host their shows from home, on the road, or even from exotic venues. Now talent portability, a new application of SIP, VoIP, and other protocols, is positively disrupting content creation workflows. In addition to the talent contributing from almost anywhere, now the call screener, producer, and even the originating studio can be nearly wherever convenience or necessity dictate. While this has always been possible, now it's practical and even advantageous. Telecom technologies like SIP/VoIP are becoming more ubiquitous and less mysterious. Along with fast Internet and VPNs, they not only enable flexible workflows, they enable alternatives to single-studio or expensive remote solutions. Moreover, cloud services enable easier, secure connections among talent, producers, and callers. Updating Television Broadcast Telephony and Communication Using SIP, VoIP and AoIP

TV broadcast facilities are sometimes reluctant to embrace change. A good example is the continued use of the antiquated telephony solutions for contribution and communications. So why-when our business phone systems are IP, and our audio systems increasingly based on AoIP-don't we make use of technology that can bring the two together? When UK-based news and multimedia content provider Independent Television News (ITN) asked exactly that question, they found the answer in a scalable, integrated AoIP and VoIP system that replaced their 25-year-old audio router and rackmount telephone hybrids. Martin Dyster, Vice President of Business Development, TV Solutions Group of the Telos Alliance, explains how the integration of a digital telephone service, delivered via SIP from the station PBX, and cutting-edge network audio technology, have provided interfacing of broadcast audio and voice circuits between local and remote field operations across a distributed network architecture.
