DMI Capture Animal Kingdom In Dubai

Animal Kingdom triumphed in the 2013 Dubai World Cup at the Meydan race course with a crushing victory. The 2011 Kentucky Derby winner took the title by two lengths over the fast finishing Red Cadeaux, to secure the US$10m prize, the richest in horse racing, with Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI) covering the event which is estimated to have been watched by one billion people in 150 countries around the world.

This year also marked the first occasion that DMI were performing all the roles of the host broadcaster, and to ensure the success of this challenge, DMI chose Vislink equipment for all RF links and remote camera racking of the wireless cameras, including the chase vehicle and helicopter totalling thirteen live links.

To reduce triax requirements, Gigawave MVL-HD3 systems with their diversity heads and single triax connection to the control and decoder unit were used, halving the length needed, which proved very popular with the DMI team.

DMI also purchased ten of Gigawaves new Clip-On 4 wireless camera transmitters with H.264 encoding. These enabled them to run a robust modulation yet still provide broadcast quality video and audio at 12Mbps with low delay back to their state-of-the-art outside broadcast vehicle. The program feed from the OB vehicle was then broadcast using Gigawave MVL-HD2 point-to-point links to Abu Dhabi and Dubai city for world-wide distribution.

The event, which featured a series of six thoroughbred horse races with a prize pot totalling over US$27m, took place at the Meydan race course situated 8km from the bustling streets of Dubai. The complex is a stunning facility, which boasts a 2.4km turf track and a 1.75km all-weather Tapeta surface track, on which the World Cup took place. The grandstand alone is 1.5km long seating 60,000 spectators, while the site boasts a 285-room luxury hotel with roof-top pool, a marina, racing museum, and IMAX theatre.
