In 2013 China Central Television (better known as CCTV ), the main national broadcaster in the People's Republic of China and one of the premiere 24/7 Broadcast News networks in the world, began upgrading its main production studios Beijing. The idea was to add new production values to its various news programs and streamline its operations to make the staff more efficient. Now, four years later, that goal has been achieved many times over, thanks to a comprehensive and cost-effective robotic camera control system from Telemetrics.
The network was looking for a new creative way of presenting our talent to keep our viewers' attention, said Troy Chow, General Manager of Tron Media Tech Company, a local system integrator and reseller of Telemetrics products that was responsible for the installation at CCTV. Telemetrics Service Technician Carlos Cordero also helped implement the new technology on site.
For the main studio CCTV chose a circular rail system mounted on the ceiling, with robotic cameras control by a single operator. Telemetrics also provided that innovative camera trail ceiling mount-which combines virtually unlimited flexibility with unrivaled smoothness and stability. The complete system includes a Telemetrics TeleGlide TG4 camera track system, EP5 remotely controlled, motorized telescoping tripods, and a PT-LP-S4 pan/tilt head with smooth variable operating speed; all under the control of a Telemetrics remotely controlled Robotic Camera Control Panel (RCCP-1). Among its many attributes, the RCCP-1 allows a single operator to control all of the cameras in the studio with an easy-to-use joystick and a few button pushes. Users can access the deep menu controls of broadcast cameras without purchasing dedicated camera control units or paint boxes.
People often talk about remotely controlled robotic systems being the future of broadcasting, but at CCTV the future is now, and, thanks to Telemetrics, has been helping customers like CCTV for the past few years.
In the studio, a mid-sized broadcast camera on the Teleglide pedestal is mounted upside down, so that the camera slowly and smoothly descends from the ceiling in front of the talent and can also travel over the talent's head on the rail system to give a sweeping 180-degree view of the studio set. I think the Telemetrics solution gives production studios maximum production value at minimum cost, Chow said. Not only are our labor costs lower, but our technical abilities have been increased and on-air errors have been reduced significantly.
Chow said CCTV management selected Telemetrics after researching other systems and found it to be the easiest to use at the best price point. In the three years it has been in operation, the CCTV staff has found the system to be reliable and it has saved them money in not having to purchase a thumbnail server to keep close track of all the different camera angles employed for each show. The system has also allowed them to create on-air looks for each show that viewers have responded very positively to.
The Telemetrics robotics system gives CCTV a new way to move the camera around the studio, Chow said, adding that Telemetric regularly provides the staff with fast and local customer service support when the need arises-like when a new operator needs to be trained. They also like the circle ceiling mount, which provides a special perspective. It's quiet in operation and the RCCP-1 control panel makes it all an integrated system that can be operated by a single operator and bring new efficiencies for CCTV's many news programs.
As major international broadcast networks like CCTV begin to add new studios and remote production facilities to their portfolios, robotic camera systems like those from Telemetrics will play a larger role in bringing new efficiencies and getting those new resource online quickly and with minimal operational expense. People often talk about remotely controlled robotic systems being the future of broadcasting, but at CCTV the future is now, and, thanks to Telemetrics, has been helping customers like CCTV for the past few years, Chow said.
