"That Bobby Brown is so hot right now."
Bobby Brown is the biggest thing in skiing right now, and for good reason. Hes an absolute ripper and just such a good dude to everyone he meets. So it shouldnt come as a surprise that he would end up on the cover of a season-opening issue of Freeskier. That said, the shot he took to score it isnt something to ignore either. We caught up with Freeskier Editor Henrik Lampert to chat a little about the cover, how it was chosen, and the rising star that is Bobby Brown.
We produce just four magazines annually, and we view that as four opportunities to make a splash four opportunities to unveil covers that are memorable, intriguing, beautiful and awesome all at the same time. Regarding this particular image, we had originally intended for it to run inside of the magazine. I thought, How cool a GoPro shot in print, in our photo gallery. It wasn't until the heat of magazine production that we stepped back and considered this for the front page. It was one of 10 photographs that we had pinned on the wall. Those other nine were all fantastic options, no doubt, but Bobby's stood out from the pack, big time. It was so unique. Everyone at the office gravitated towards the image and that was a solid indicator that we had a winner on our hands. As aforementioned, we are always striving to achieve a lasting, memorable impact with our covers and this one fulfilled that criteria not just through its aesthetic qualities but also by virtue of being the first GoPro photo to run on the cover of an internationally-distributed sporting publication.
I loved this image from the moment I laid eyes on it. To see Bobby suspended in the air in such a cool, calm and collected manner-and with that perfect grab-it just struck me as a wonderful moment in time. I'm familiar with the mounts that were used to achieve this look, but I knew that wouldn't be the case for many readers. I loved the idea of people seeing the photo and wondering, How in the ?
Certainly, featuring an athlete on the cover who boasts major clout is always desirable for us. Having a noteworthy individual promote a magazine through his or her own channels, and via his or her sponsors' channels, it helps to drive discussion around our product and our brand in general. On top of owning one of the largest social followings of any professional skier out there, Bobby is extremely relevant now, right at the time that this magazine is circulating. He's hot off the release of his first solo film project, Be Water, and the buzz is loud. His performance in that film is absolutely mind-blowing. To present Bobby with a cover, it's very gratifying for us I regard it, in some ways, as a reward for the hard work he has put forth. A way to say, Hey, we see you and the positive energy you're pouring into skiing. Keep it up. Bobby is also one of the most humble and kindest pro skiers out there, so, I'd be remiss not to acknowledge him for those traits, as well.
