Opening Night & World Premieres: South African Films in the Spotlight

The Cape Town International Film Market and Festival. Taking place from October 12th - 21st at the V & A Waterfront, the CTIFM&F will be a celebration of film from across the world and also of the best in South African film.

The Cape Town International Film Festival will open with the South African premiere of the South-African-Dutch co-production, An Act of Defiance: The Bram Fischer Story with director Jean van de Velde in attendance along with many of the families of the original Rivonia trialists. The film is a political thriller that tells the true story of how after ten men are arrested on a farm in Rivonia for conspiring to commit sabotage and violent acts against the repressive South African government, tenacious lawyer Bram Fisher steps up to the challenge as lead counsel.

A diverse and exciting range of South African Films will have their World Premieres at the CTIFM &F with glamorous red carpet events taking place at Nu Metro at the V & A Waterfront.

All red carpet events will be attended by the film directors amongst other invited guests; tickets can also be purchased from October 2nd via www.filmfestival.capetown.

South African films having their World Premieres include:

District Six: Rising from the Dust: The memory of District Six is an iconic to Cape Town as Table Mountain, and each story is unique. Filmmaker Weaam Williams' mother Nazley Hartley was on of the 60 000 t0 80 000 people were forcibly removed form District Six. The documentary is a deeply personal story, that examines the microcosm within the macrocosm and the legacy of intergenerational pain and dispossession of wealth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrEVlZSMhsg

Woodwind: The extraordinary work by Fin Manjoo, Woodwind, is a deep journey of a doubter, a composer who would rather believe in his own madness than the existence of the extraordinary. The feature film, made in India and South Africa, and was shot by Swiss cinematographer Nicolas Joray (The Yellow Star, Bye Bye Berlusconi and Baltic Storm), who's three decades of experience was invaluable during the most challenging conditions in India. Gracie: Director Liana Hassimtells the story of Gracie, a Zulu girl born to a mother who was not ready to have a child. Gracie's world view shows the harshness of the city of Durban in the grip of xenophobic attacks, but her child-like point of view creates an artistic world of sketches which make some sort of sense of beauty out of the apparent chaos.

Indoda: John Warner directed this story of Vuyisa, a young boy on the eve of his Xhosa initiation rite who makes a decision causes his life to spin out of control. With no friends or family to turn to he is all alone in the wilderness. South African Premieres

Matwetwe: Kagiso Lediga's crime-comedy film fuses local oral storytelling traditions to the American indie ethos and tells the story of Lefa, whose life is on the cusp of major change. Accepted into university to study botany, he's about to leave the ghetto township that has been his home behind if only his deadbeat father will come through with his school fees.
