Launched today by Simon Stevens, the chief executive of NHS England, in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The companies will work alongside other leading partners within the Technology Integrated Health Management (TIHM) Test Bed a collaboration led by Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
The TIHM Test Bed will help people living with dementia or frailty remain in their own homes for longer. Individuals will be provided with network-enabled sensors, wearables, monitors and other devices, all remotely connected as an Internet of Things, to monitor their health at home. This will empower people to take more control over their own health and wellbeing, as well as enabling health and social care staff to deliver more responsive and effective services.
Ageing population trends throughout the developed world are driving an uptake in the use of technology. A recent Research and Markets report, IoT Healthcare Market Global Forecast to 2020 , predicts that the global healthcare IoT market will grow from an estimated current value of $32 billion to $163 billion by 2020.
Around one-third of all homes in England are older households, headed by persons aged 65 or older. 3.5m people aged over 65, including nearly half of all those over 75, live alone and the number of people aged over 85 is expected to double over the next 20 years. The number of dementia sufferers in the UK is expected to increase from 850,000 people to over 1 million by 2025. Today, one in fourteen people over 65 suffer from dementia.
Arqiva and Vision360 are working in partnership to deliver a national standards-based assistive care IoT platform, which brings together Vision360's V360 Toolkit health and assistive care technology and the SIGFOX IoT network run by Arqiva across the UK. The SIGFOX network is already accessible by 30 per cent of the UK population across 11 major cities including Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield.
The IoT Test Beds are part of IoTUK, an integrated £40 million, three-year Government programme that seeks to advance the UK's global leadership in IoT and increase the adoption of high quality IoT technologies and services throughout businesses and the public sector.
NHS England stated today that, for selected innovation companies, the Test Beds are an unprecedented opportunity to demonstrate their solutions at large scale on a global stage, it is envisaged that successful Test Bed partners will deliver wider financial benefits to the NHS and the UK economy as they are rolled out in other areas at home and abroad.
Eddie Abrams, chief executive of Vision360, explained:
Were delighted to have been selected with Arqiva to be a part of this IoT Test Bed. This is the latest development in a series of innovations that we have worked on with the NHS in recent years, all with the aim of facilitating both better healthcare outcomes and lower cost. The unique capabilities of the IoT network Arqiva delivers will advance both of these aims.
Nicolas Ott, Managing Director Telecoms & M2M at Arqiva, commented:
We are very excited to be a part of this ground breaking project and look forward to following its progress. The great thing about the kind of in-home care solutions afforded by this partnership is their potential impact not just on individual patients and the quality of care they receive, but on the lives of their family members and the future of the country's healthcare system as a whole. Our IoT Network enables innovation in healthcare and other services to be delivered more effectively and at lower cost in a wide range of settings both at home and on the move.
Payam Barnaghi, Project Technology Lead at the University of Surrey, said:
The Internet of Things' testbed will provide continious monitoring and observation data in a secure environment and will provide mechanisms to extract information. This in turn will support better and faster decision making for caregivers, clinical teams and support groups.
