ZEI presents MEL 90: New Excimer Laser from ZEI for Refractive Surgery Reduces Treatment Time to the Benefit Bo Doctor and Patient

"In the new MEL 90 we are building on our many years of experience in the field of excimer lasers and introducing innovations that are precisely tailored to the needs of todays ophthalmologists," says Ludwin Monz, President and CEO.

With its new Triple-A ablation profile for the entire range of sphero-cylindrical corrections, the MEL 90 ensures minimal ablation depth and also guarantees gentle correction with excellent predictability for patients with very high or very low ametropia.

In LASIK treatment the ZEISS excimer laser achieves an intraoperative ablation speed of 1 diopter in only 1.3 seconds with a laser frequency of 500 Hz. This substantially reduces the active treatment time, therefore increasing comfort for both patient and surgeon. In addition, the unique sensor-controlled CCA suction of the MEL 90 ensures very good atmospheric conditions around the eye, further enhancing the predictability of the results.

Excimer lasers from ZEISS show excellent results in clinical use: in the treatment of 79 eyes with the Triple A-profile, Dr. Bertram Meyer from the Eye Canter in Cologne and the Laser Eyecare and Research Center in Dubai achieved an efficacy index (defined as the ratio of the postoperative uncorrected distance acuity to the best corrected acuity prior to surgery) of 0.96 three months to 0.97 twelve months after the procedure*.

The MEL 90 incorporates the well-proven properties of the MEL 80. The new ZEISS excimer laser is also a flying spot laser with a laser beam diameter of only 0.7 millimeters. This means that the cornea is modeled with extreme exactness, resulting in a very smooth surface.

In addition, the MEL 90 offers various possibilities for customization. With FLEXIQUENCE, the surgeon has the flexible choice between frequencies of 250 or 500 Hz. Overall, the MEL 90 makes the work of refractive surgeons more effective and cost-efficient through simplification of treatment planning and collaboration between the surgeon and his or her assistants.

Like its sister product MEL 80 which will continue to be available, MEL 90 is very versatile: in addition to LASIK and femto-LASIK and methods of surface ablation like photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and LASEK, treatments such as phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) can be performed. Customized therapy of presbyopic patients using the PRESBYOND Laser Blended Vision method is only possible with ZEISS excimer lasers. Therefore, the MEL 90 is a clear commitment of ZEISS to excimer technology in refractive surgery. "The needs of doctors and patients in refractive laser surgery can be very different. This is why we offer a broad product portfolio incorporating not only the minimally invasive SMILE methods, but also the latest leading-edge excimer technology. We will continue to drive both platforms," says Ludwin Monz.
