Liverpool and Manchester City pledge to push each other next season

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed what was said between himself and Pep Guardiola after the Champions League final.

Manchester City and Liverpool have developed a friendly' rivalry as England's elite clubs. Next to the Reds rivalry with the other big Manchester club almost any other would seem friendly' but Klopp and Guardiola have immense respect for one another.

Speaking after Liverpool won their sixth European Cup with a 2-0 win over Spurs in Madrid Klopp told the press that he had received a congratulatory phone call from Guardiola.

We promised each other already that we will kick our butts next year again, Klopp said of his brief exchange with Guardiola. We will go for everything and we'll see if we get something.

Klopp insisted that his focus remains on player, squad and club development and not on winning trophies. The manager was, however, glad to have won something and said that big things were coming from his young Liverpool team.

I'm interested really in development, but I get it, we have to win things, and so it's really important that people don't ask now all the time about not winning things, he said.

Now we won something, and we will carry on, we want to win things, 100 percent.

This is only the start for this group, it's a wonderful age group, they still have the best times in their career still ahead of them, so that's big.

Liverpool have a little just about two months to prepare for the new season which will begin with a Charity Shield clash with Premier League winners Manchester City but the UEFA Super Cup meeting with Chelsea is one fans are especially looking forward to, with the match to take place in Istanbul. The 2020 Champions League final will also take place in the Turkish capital which was the scene of Liverpool's incredible 2005 Champions League win.

Klopp insisted that his team would give their all to retain the Champions League next season but warned that it would not be easy.

We know that sometimes we carry the burden of history and making Istanbul happen again will be a target I would say, but it will be difficult, said Klopp.
