This Monday evening, November 21st, was a night of celebration for the crew of the telenovela Hidden Truths. The production received the Telenovela award at the 44th International Emmy Awards, at the gala ceremony held at the Hilton New York Hotel. Written by Walcyr Carrasco and directed by Mauro Mendon a Filho, the telenovela aired on Globo, in Brazil, between June and September of 2015, winning over the audience with its plot about the fashion underworld.
On the screen, scenes from the telenovela anticipated the victory announced by actress Debi Mazar. Walcyr Carrasco took the stage to receive the award, in the company of actresses Camila Queiroz, Grazi Massafera, Guilhermina Guinle and Agatha Moreira, general directors Andr Felipe Binder and Natalia Grimberg, director Allan Fiterman and cast producer Bruna Barreto. Hidden Truths allowed me to dive deep into my work. I poured my entire soul into this telenovela. The directors and the cast also reached deep to give life to the characters. It was a groundbreaking work that presented controversial issues such as prostitution in the fashion world and the human destruction caused by crack. It was liberating to write it. In itself, this work allowed me to go deep into my inner self as an artist, said the author.
Mauro Mendon a Filho, who could not be in New York to attend the event, also celebrated the news. I was already so happy to be among the nominees, and now that we've won, I am overjoyed. I am also very happy for Walcyr. He deserves this recognition because the telenovela was so daring, said Mendon a, who also directed another International Emmy winner in 2012, the telenovela The Illusionist. I would like to share this award with my partners and general directors Andr Felipe Binder and Nat lia Grimberg, with the directors Andr Barros, Allan Fiterman and Mariana Richard, as well as with the entire staff and cast. This Emmy is for all of us, he added.
A love triangle involving mother and daughter is the focus of Hidden Truths, which exposes the dark side of the fashion world, in addition to exploring each one's limits when it comes to obsession, money and pleasure. The plot revolves around a sweet and beautiful young girl full of dreams, Angel (Camila Queiroz), who, after arriving in the city of S o Paulo willing to become model, becomes involved in a gloomy reality that goes far beyond the catwalks. The telenovela also addresses issues such as drugs, a topic featured in the storyline through the eyes of one of the characters, Larissa, a young model who becomes addicted to crack. The character was portrayed by Grazi Massafera, whose acting performance touched critics and the public, earning her a nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress category.
The victory was also celebrated by Raphael Corr a Netto, Globo's Executive Director of International Business. We strive daily to transform ideas and dreams into reality and to bring instigating and inspiring content to our audience. Our commitment and investments are with quality and innovation, and the result is reflected in works such as Hidden Truths', a telenovela that grasped the Brazilian audience and fans around the world. With exquisite plot and extremely refined production and direction, it deserves the recognition from the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the industry, he said.
This year, a total of forty nominations from fifteen different countries competed for the award across ten categories. Considered the most prominent event in the international television industry, the International Emmy Awards recognizes excellence in television produced outside of the United States, as well as US Primetime programs produced in languages other than English. Created in 2014, this year the category was presented by actress Fabiana Karla, representing Brazil.
In addition to winning with Hidden Truths, Globo received five other nominations. Rules of the Game, by Jo o Emanuel Carneiro, with general and artistic direction by Amora Mautner, also competed for the title of best Telenovela, along with 30 Vies - Samuel Pag , from Canada, and Bridges of Love, from the Philippines. Both telenovelas also won nominations in the categories Best Performance by an Actress to Grazi Massafera and Best Performance by an Actor to Alexandre Nero, for his performance in Rules of the Game. In the other divisions, the network competed with The Mess, in Comedy, and with The Wise Ones, which was produced by O2 Filmes for Globo, and competed in the TV Movie/Miniseries category.
As the only Brazilian television network to have won the International Emmy, Globo has fifteen statuettes. Last year, Empire' won the Telenovela' award, and Sweet Mother' was the winner in the Comedy' category. Globo was awarded its first International Emmy in 1981, for the musical Noahs Ark'. The next year, the network won with Life and Death Severina'. In 1983, Globo's founder Roberto Marinho was awarded with an Emmy in the Direction' category. In the debut of the Telenovela category, in 2009, the Emmy went to India - A Love story, by Gl ria Perez. In 2011, the network once again won the Telenovela' category with Blood Ties' produced with SIC and aired in Portugal. That same year, Globo received the International Emmy award in the Journalism category for Jornal Nacional's coverage of the invasion of Complexo do Alem o. In 2012, won two Emmys for the productions The Illusionist', in Telenovela', and The Invisible Woman', in Comedy'. The following year, in addition to Fernanda Montenegro being awarded with the Best Performance by an Actress', Globo won the Telenovela award with Side by Side. In 2014, Roberto Irineu Marinho, president of the Grupo Globo, was honored with the World Television Personality'
