FOX Entertainment partnered with Verizon to overcome significant production hurdles during the filming of the second season of the reality show Extracted. The production, which takes place in the Canadian wilderness, required connecting 25 video sources and 20 communication devices across four square miles of rugged terrain, while managing a bottleneck of 100,000 hours of 24/7 footage.
To address these challenges, Verizon implemented a dual-technology solution:
Private 5G Network: A temporary, portable private 5G network was deployed to provide secure, high-bandwidth, and low-latency coverage, replacing unreliable public network connectivity and supporting 5G-enabled ENG cameras and wireless communications.
Edge AI Platform: Verizon trialed an Edge AI platform that used computer vision to identify contestants within video feeds, providing automatic timestamps and summaries to simplify the editing process. Additionally, a live data API integration with mobile devices and 5G video encoders allowed the Director to track contestants and camera crews in real-time on a digital map.
The impact of this deployment was significant, allowing the production crew to maintain seamless connectivity in a challenging environment. The trial of the Edge AI platform also demonstrated a path to drastically reducing post-production timelines by automating tedious logging tasks.
This collaboration serves as a proof of concept for the broader media and entertainment industry, demonstrating how portable, secure, and scalable network models can be applied to studio backlots, live festivals, and concerts to manage operations and security.
