Thousands across the UK have been following Labrinth's quest to forge a one-of-a-kind track in a partnership with Sennheiser UK from sounds submitted by the general public. The pop star now has just a few weeks to compose something beautiful from the bizarre.
The British public have been uploading sounds in their droves from cooking sausages and flushing toilets to screaming, kissing and sounds of the underground' all with the hope their individual noise will make the final cut on the track.
The campaign, Project Noise, was inspired by a piece of research from Columbia University called the Million Song Dataset* which highlights the decline in the timbral variety in modern music. Labrinth's track will use the sounds submitted by the public to create an original track, which pushes the norm that popular music falls into - taking listeners outside of their popular music comfort zone.
Dr Lauren Stewart, Reader and co-director of the MSc in Music, Mind and Brain at Goldsmith's University has been working closely with Sennheiser on the campaign, analysing noises uploaded from the British public:
It is fascinating to see the type of noises that people have chosen to send in - a creaking door, for example, or somebody being chatted up in the park. This demonstrates that we humans can find the intrinsic value in things that are ordinarily taken for granted. When people use music devices they are in their own sound bubble', blocking out noises from the outside world that they might regard as noise'. But this project will turn that on its head, as Labrinth makes these noises into something that people will invite in rather than block out, accepting it into their personalised sound zone. The public has definitely tried to challenge him and I've no doubt his production skills will be pushed to their limits. What is he going to do with these sounds? Will he try to create a narrative, piecing these random sounds together? And how will he deal with the fact that none of these sounds has anything like a beat? With a complete lack of narrative connecting these random noises, he will need to build his own whilst simultaneously adding a temporal dimension and layering sounds with timbres that are often curious but unsettling. It could be the next big thing
