Blackmagic PYXIS 6K digital film camera's full frame sensor creates cinematic viewing experience.
Blackmagic Design today announced that Mi Amor, the latest music video from Mexican Cuban singer songwriter Steffie Beltt, was captured with Blackmagic PYXIS 6K digital film camera in Blackmagic RAW. Directed by Miguel Salinas, the video was shot to look like a single, uncut sequence, and it showcases a minimalist aesthetic, focusing on Beltt's emotional performance.
Known as La Voz de Fuego ( The Voice of Fire ), Beltt's performance delves into themes of longing and emotional vulnerability as she pays tribute to her late parents. Soft lighting and close up shots emphasize the song's emotional depth, allowing viewers to connect with the artist. For Salinas, a film director and cinematographer with more than 30 years of experience who has worked on numerous feature films, advertisements and music videos, it was important that the visuals were cinematic but expressed simplicity to ensure that the song's message remained the focal point.
Steffie and I started working together thanks to a mutual friend, said Salinas. I worked on Steffie's first music video for her album La Ra z, Vol. 1,' which was shot with the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K in Mexico City and Havana, honoring her Mexican and Cuban roots. From that moment on, Steffie has relied on me for her music videos.
For Mi Amor, Salinas relied on the PYXIS 6K and its full frame sensor. The music video follows Steffie as she delivers her performance in front of a simple, plain backdrop with several items like a microphone, armchair and memorabilia that were important to her growing up, he said. Our camera operator followed Steffie with the PYXIS 6K on a gimbal and a single 500 Watt light to reflect her shadow on the backdrop. The camera was at ISO 400 and the lens at an aperture of f/2.0. From bright scenes to low light, the PYXIS 6K performed beautifully.
The PYXIS 6K's full frame sensor was crucial to helping Salinas achieve the desired look and translate Steffie's gripping performance for cinematic viewing, especially with the goal to enter Mi Amor into international music video festivals.
Full frame is essential, since it gives me the opportunity to think about projects that can be on movie screens. Also, it allows me to play with framing during the shoot or reframe a shot in post if need be, Salinas added. The sensor, combined with Blackmagic's color science, allowed us to capture the tones we planned from the very beginning. Plus, shooting in Backmagic RAW allowed me to get to post with an unsurpassed image quality and without wasting space on hard drives.
Editing and color grading were completed in DaVinci Resolve Studio, further enhancing efficiency and refining the overall aesthetic.
Whenever I begin a project, I always ask to work in DaVinci Resolve so I can start with simultaneous editing and color correction. If necessary, I can also create composites and visual effects without having to resort to other programs, Salinas explained. I usually create basic compositions on the color page, as well as my own element layers and compose in the nodes. From there, I move on to Fairlight for audio mixing. These workflows give me speed, efficiency, and the confidence that I can deliver the projects as I envision them without exceeding budget and timelines.
Blackmagic Design has completely changed the way I work in film and music videos, he concluded. I am looking forward to my upcoming projects and to continue to push the boundaries on what I can deliver for my clients.
