The WRAL Weather Patio got to make a second debut on Friday, November 10, 2023, thanks to Mother Nature. The new outdoor studio will mainly be used during the 4p and 5p newscasts due to the location of the sun; the noon newscast will only be outside on cloudy days, due to the glare. However, Mother Nature served up a cloudy day for the first noon newscast after the unveiling of the WRAL Weather Patio the evening before. WRAL-TV Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner got to do the honors, even getting sprinkled on a bit during her forecast.
A special guest stopped by to watch the new outdoor set in action. Corp CEO & Board Chairman Jim Goodmon stood by for Gardner's weather reports.

The backdrop for the WRAL Weather Patio, the WRAL Azalea Gardens play a special role in Goodmon's family. His grandfather and CBC Founder A.J. Fletcher established the WRAL Gardens as a service to the community in 1959.
Fletcher loved azaleas and enjoyed finding new varieties. He decided to share that passion with the general public, personally overseeing the installation of a thousand azaleas to create the original Gardens.
Azaleas continue to be an important theme for Capitol Broadcasting. This past October CBC gave away over 5,000 azaleas to nonprofits in North Carolina through the 37th Annual WRAL Azalea Celebration. And each December, CBC awards all of the company's long-term employees with plants. Staffers with 5 of more years of service receive a plant for every five years with the company.
Now when in bloom the azaleas will be a constant on WRAL's evening newscasts. And viewers will see the many other colors that cycle through the gardens as WRAL-TV Meteorologists deliver the forecast actually out in the weather!
