New SA film gets North American sale --

Dexter Davis, CEO of D Street Media Group, has announced that D Street bought the North American rights for new South African Afrikaans-language film Musiek vir die Agtergrond (Background Music).

The film is the third movie from the dynamic production house Bosbok Ses Films (BSF) in collaboration with The Film Factory and D Street Pictures.

In only four years, BSF has produced acclaimed movies Verraaiers (Traitors), Roepman (Stargazer), as well as Musiek vir die Agtergrond and Stuur Groete aan Mannetjies Roux (Regards to Mannetjies Roux), which screens from 13 December in South Africa.

Davis says: This important collaboration and second acquisition of one of Sallas films reinforces D Street s commitment to the South African film industry. Sallas directorial debut underscores the tremendous talent he has as a multifaceted filmmaker. We are thrilled about Background Music and can t wait to bring it to the US audience.

De Jager comments: We are extremely proud and excited about the opportunity to showcase a South African story in the biggest market in the world. We, cast and crew, have worked hard on our craft as filmmakers and are motivated to work even harder now that we know our work will be seen by an audience used to only seeing the best.

He adds that they are confident that Musiek vir die Agtergrond has a universal theme and that it will resonate with audiences anywhere in the world.

Davis also announced that De Jager has agreed to come on board as director of two films D Street Pictures will produce over the next three years.

The first one is called 1961, a family drama, which will be shot in South Africa during 2014. The second is an untitled World War II drama that will be filmed in 2016 in Germany and New York.

We have great faith in Sallas as a director and wanted to give him an opportunity to spread his wings internationally, comments Davis. The movie 1961 was written by an American filmmaker with a Sundance pedigree and the excitement to produce and shoot this film as a South African production is beyond amazing.

Musiek vir die Agtergrond had its premiere in Johannesburg on 30 September, following its successful international first screening at the kykNET Silwerskermfees in August in Cape Town.

The movie stars John-Henry Opperman, Lizelle de Klerk, Br milda van Rensburg, Ian Roberts, Neil Sandilands and Terence Bridgett, among others.

South African audiences can watch the film from 11 October 2013 when it releases nationwide through Ster-Kinekor.
