Last month, NMR exhibited at BVE 2018 at the Excel in London. At our booth, we demoed Cantemo Portal and the new hybrid-cloud hub for managing video, iconik. Lots of visitors to our booth were interested in hearing more about the video (or artificial) intelligence capabilities of iconik, which enables users to identify and automatically tag video content upon ingestion with metadata capable of describing even minute objects and entities. This means that content ingested by the platform is highly discoverable.
As it happens, there seemed to be a significant buzz surrounding AI and Machine Learning in general at the show. Clearly, when it comes to video management, AI-based technologies have the potential to revolutionise workflows. At BVE this year, both Google and AWS had a stand for the first time, representing a significant push into the media and entertainment industry.
In fact, David Kulczar, Senior Product Manager of Watson Video Analytics at IBM Watson Media, spoke in several sessions during the show, one in particular which explored the impact of AI and Machine Learning (ML) on the media industry, specifically content creation and distribution. He also spoke in a session focused on how AI could power the future of sports broadcasting by delivering enhanced viewer experiences, contextual ads and streamlining production workflows through content discovery.
This session was particularly applicable to Cantemo and NMR, given our recent integration of Portal and Opta for a major sports organisation in the UK. The integration uses Opta data to automatically create subclips from events in the data feed and can easily be adapted for anyone who needs instant access to clips of match highlights. Cantemo Portal was, of course, not neglected at BVE, and I myself spoke on a session on the Techflow Futures stage all about how the Telegraph Media Group (TMG) uses the media management solution to manage media workflows and publish to Online Video Platforms (OPVs). Joining me on the panel was Howard Elston, Technical Product Specialist at TMG and Ed Gould, Head of Post Production at TMG.
TMG is the publisher of the UKs most widely read broadsheet newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, but it is also a video-focused multimedia company, producing video news stories and in-depth video features, as well as live streaming regularly. In most industries where video production is on the increase, the challenges of fast turnaround media ingest, as well as processing, managing and distributing this content is causing organisations like TMG to re-evaluate their storage and workflow environments. One solution to this is the flexibility offered by hybrid cloud, especially when coupled with an accompanying on-premise aspect.
The Telegraph Media Group chose Cantemo Portal for custom ingest and distribution workflows, developed by NMR and ToolsOnAir, with integrated cloud storage provided by Quantums StorNext and FlexTier. By turning to a cloud solution for off-site back-up and archiving, TMG has a guaranteed Disaster Recovery (DR) solution and ensured business continuity. Furthermore, having DR in the cloud rather than a data centre is significantly more cost-effective, as TMG simply pay-as-they-go.
The main takeaway from the session was that Cantemo Portal and Quantums solution have given TMG the foundations to build on as their business as it evolves within a video-first world, enabling it to continue producing quality content for its millions of readers worldwide.
