Yves Meyer, the inventor of the JPEG 2000, Premio Abel from Matem ticas Considerado como el Nobel de las matem ticas, este galard n reconoce la aportaci n que la tecnolog a de compresi n JPEG 2000 ha supuesto a aplicaciones como el cine digital.
El matem tico Yves Meyer encontr por casualidad un buen d a de 1984 en la fotocopiadora de la Escuela Polit cnica de Palaiseau (Par s) un trabajo de unos colegas f sicos y matem ticos que desarrollaba por encargo de una compa a petrolera un nueva t cnica para descomponer se ales s smicas complejas.
Partiendo de aquel estudio sobre la denominada teor a de las ond culas , Meyer desarroll un complejo est ndar de compresi n capaz de desmontar im genes y sonidos en paquetes de informaci n m s sencillos.
Ayer martes, m s de tres d cadas despu s de aquel descubrimiento casual que dio lugar al est ndar de compresi n JPEG 2000, la Academia Noruega de Ciencias ha reconocido con el Premio Abel de Matem ticas, considerado el Nobel de las ciencias exactas, a Yves Meyer.
El matem tico parti de la idea de que si aquellas ond culas se pod an simplificar, cualquier onda podr a comportarse de la misma forma. De esta forma, el JPEG 2000 permite la compresi n optimizada de se ales de audio y v deo. El est ndar utiliza una descomposici n wavelet para reducir el tama o de una imagen logrando una optimizaci n superior a la de otros formatos de compresi n.
JPEG 2000 puede trabajar con niveles de compresi n mayores que los de JPEG sin incurrir en los principales defectos del formato anterior con altas tasas de compresi n: generaci n de bloques uniformes y aspecto borroso. Tambi n se adapta mejor a la carga progresiva de las im genes. Sus principales desventajas est n en que tiende a emborronar m s la imagen que JPEG, incluso para un mismo tama o de archivo (pero sin formar bloques), y que elimina algunos detalles peque os y texturas, que el formato JPEG normal s llega a representar.
Hoy son muchas las aplicaciones en diferentes campos como la medicina, la cartograf a o el audiovisual que optimizan sus procesos en base al JPEG 2000. En el caso del audiovisual, la postproducci n o el cine digital utilizan esta compresi n para la gesti n, edici n, tratamiento y distribuci n de se ales de audio y v deo.
Meyer, de 77 a os y adscrito a la cole Normale Sup rieure Paris-Saclay, recibir el galard n, dotado con 6 millones de coronas noruegas (675.000 euros), de manos del rey Harald V de Noruega el 23 de mayo en Oslo. El premio Abel se denomina as en recuerdo del matem tico noruego Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829), y fue establecido por el Parlamento noruego en 2002. El Comit Abel, compuesto por cinco matem ticos reconocidos internacionalmente, es el encargado de elegir cada a o al ganador.
