A chilly and possibly wet start awaits runners in the 94th Comrades Marathon in Durban early on Sunday morning according to the weather forecast.
Comrades weather- DurbanLight rain is predicted for the area around Durban's City Hall, where the race starts this year.
The race gets underway at 5:30 SAST on Sunday 9 June with the temperature in Durban expected to be around 15 degrees celsius.
By the six hour cut-off mark in Drummond, at 11:40 the temperature on the road is expected to have risen into the low 20s, while the early showers will have given way to partly cloudy conditions.
Comrades weather Scottsville, PietermaritzburgThe weather conditions should be fairly forgiving for runners, although the chilly conditions expected at the final cut off at 17:30. The temperature is expected to get up to around 23 degrees celsius in Pietermaritzburg and dip to around 15 degrees at the Scottsville Race Course at the final gun.
Should the winner in either the Men's or Women's races in this year's Comrades break the Up Run' Best Times of Russia's Leonid Shvetsov (2008 - 5:24:49) or Elena Nurgalieva (2006 - 6:09:24) respectively, he or she will take home a minimum of R1-million in Comrades prize money, comprised of a first prize of R500,000 plus a R500,000 incentive for breaking the Best Time; in addition to prizes for First South African (R200,000) and First KZN Man and Woman (R45,000).
On top of their prize money, 1-ounce Gold Medals valued at over R770,000 are awarded to the first ten men and the first ten women.
