VRLAND revives WWII Operation Market Garden' in the Overloon War Museum with Mistika VR

Operation Market Garden is a highly immersive VR experience, bringing back to life an eponymous historical moment during the Second World War. Exhibited at the Overloon War Museum and post-produced with the industry's favorite optical flow stitching tool Mistika VR, the 360 video was created by VRLAND, one of the leading facilities in VR/360 video production in The Netherlands.

With the idea of delivering a singular adventure, the creators wanted to make sure that the visitors immerse in the role of a British paratrooper. When you put on a VR headset, the narration takes you back to September 1944, right in the heart of the famous Market Garden' operation. You are seated behind two pilots in a Douglas C-47 Skytrain or commonly known as Dakota' and just some moments after, you jump off the plane to conquer several bridges from the Germans together with other paratroopers, described

-- Shooting inside one of the world's most famous aircraft

When filming in the Dakota's pilot cabin, achieving the highest possible 360 /VR image quality was one of the most important aspects for the VRLAND team. However, there were several complexities to this project that needed to be overcome in order to deliver outstanding results.

One of them was that the aircraft is located in the museum and cannot be moved. We had to replace the windows with green screens, so we could compose and animate the environment later in the post-production, aiming to deliver a real-life flying impression, shared Jimi. Placing green screens as seen in the image below caused lighting issues and catching the right balance was key for image quality.

-- Delivering exceptional results with Mistika VR

The team first deployed Mistika VR to quickly stitch RAW footage and create low resolution dailies for client reviews. After obtaining initial approval, the creatives returned to Mistika VR and refined the stitch with more complex operations to achieve great-looking content.

The Dakota's cabin was very small making the shooting process challenging, and with little distance between camera and actors, causing several parallax issues. The power and speed of the complete set of tools and functionalities offered in Mistika VR allowed us to efficiently overcome all the challenges, make the best possible 180 /360 stitches and create a truly captivating experience, shared Jimi and concluded that Mistika VR provides much higher level of creative flexibility compared to any other VR-focussed solutions.

La simulaci n de la Operaci n Market Garden se encuentra expuesta en el War Museum (Museo de Guerra) en Overloon, Pa ses Bajos, como una experiencia inmersiva en realidad virtual que recrea dicho momento hist rico de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Postproducido en Mistika VR, la soluci n de stitching y optical flow de SGO, el proyecto fue creado por VRLAND, reconocida productora de v deos 360 /VR.

Con la idea de crear un viaje al pasado, los productores quer an asegurar que los visitantes al museo revivieran el papel de un paracaidista de la tropa brit nica. Al instante de ponerte las gafas de VR, la narraci n te traslada directamente a septiembre de 1944, al centro de la famosa Operaci n Market Garden . Tan solo unos momentos despu s de estar sentado detr s de dos pilotos en un Douglas C-47 Skytrain conocido tambi n como Dakota -, saltas del avi n para conquistar varios puentes alemanes junto con otros paracaidistas , describi Jimi de Haas, Fundador de VRLAND.

Rodaje de mucha complejidad

Para el equipo de VRLAND, uno de los aspectos m s importantes en el momento de rodar dentro de la cabina del piloto del Dakota era lograr una calidad de imagen 360 /VR muy elevada. Sin embargo, durante el proyecto surgieron varias complejidades que necesitaban ser ajustadas para entregar resultados excepcionales.

Una de ellas era que el avi n est ubicado dentro del museo y no se puede mover. Hemos tenido que reemplazar las ventanas con chroma y de esa manera poder componer el entorno posteriormente en post-producci n, con el objetivo de conseguir una impresi n de vuelo que fuera lo m s realista posible , comparti de Haas. Colocando el chroma como se muestra en la imagen de abajo, ha causado problemas de iluminaci n y lograr un balance correcto era clave para la calidad de imagen.

Obteniendo resultados extraordinarios con Mistika VR

El equipo implement Mistika VR primero para hacer el cosido de los ficheros RAW y crear dailies a baja resoluci n para la revisi n del cliente. Despu s de la aprobaci n inicial, los profesionales han vuelto a Mistika VR para mejorar el stitch con otras operaciones m s complejas y as obtener un resultado impecable.

La cabina del Dakota era muy peque a y complicaba el proceso de rodaje, a adiendo que la distancia entre la c mara y los actores era bastante peque a causando varias dificultades. La potencia y rapidez de las funcionalidades que ofrece Mistika VR nos ha permitido superar todas las dificultades, realizar un cosido de im genes 180 /360 preciso y crear una exp
