The Midas Awards, a competition judged by 30 international client and agency leaders which recognises global excellence in financial advertising and marketing, has revealed that South African agencies are international leaders in their field, taking the coveted top two positions in the rankings.

Based on the Midas Report, which recognises and positions the most successful companies in the financial and marketing communications industry worldwide according to points earned for winning entries, King James in Cape Town held the number one position for the second year in a row followed by The Jupiter Drawing Room in Johannesburg, which came second by only a few points.

Alisun Armstrong, executive director, said: We had a lot of really exciting work this year. It s no wonder the rankings were so competitive! It really shows the innovative and creative work going on in these specialised communications.

Report points are calculated as follows: King Midas Award, 9 points; Gold Ingot Award, 6 points; Silver Ingot Award, 4 points, and Finalist, 1 point.

The full 2013 rankings were:

1. King James from Cape Town, South Africa with 38 points

2. The Jupiter Drawing Room from Johannesburg, South Africa with 35 points

3. Artplan from Rio de Janiero, Brazil with 28 points

4. Lavender from Sydney, Australia with 22 points

5. M&C Saatchi Direct & Digital Communications from Mumbai, India, Publicis Kaplan Thaler from New York City, USA and webguerillas AG from Z rich, Switzerland tied with 18 points

6. 41? 29! from Istanbul, Turkey and FP7/DXB from Dubai, UAE tied with 16 points

7. JWT Mumbai from Mumbai, India with 15 points
