NFVF statement on the passing of Mandela --

The following statement has been released by the National Film and Video Foundation:

The NFVF learnt with great sadness of the passing of South Africa s noble man, Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Today the country and the world mourn this icon who taught the world the importance of reconciliation, unity, forgiveness and peace.

Madiba contributed immensily to the transformation of this country, a contribution that led to our people gaining a voice to speak freely and to tell the story of South Africa. Since his release from prison and subsequent election as the country s first statesman, South Africa has been able to tell the world about Madiba, who strongly believed and stood for the realisation of human dignity.

Many stories have been told about his legacy: A Letter to Nelson Mandela; the release of Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom, being the most current celebrations of his life.

To all the filmmakers, let us continue to celebrate and honour our former president through the telling of his story, honouring his memory and in the process ensuring that the world and future generations remember his life and are inspired to themselves live out all that Madiba stood for.

In loss and grief storytelling is a means of healing. We salute our filmmakers who had the foresight to capture the Nelson Mandela story in his lifetime, now more than ever that work will be our means of positive reflection and inspiration.

As we bid Tata farewell, we salute the film industry for continuing to capture the nations sentiments in moving pictures, said NFVF CEO Zama Mkosi.
