Custom Consoles SteelBase Furniture Chosen for LHCb Control Suites

Custom Consoles announces that, after a successful tendering process, it has provided technical control furniture for the CERN Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) experiment at the experimental site on the Franco-Swiss border. The contract included the design and installation of desks for the LHCb main control room and the LHC cryogenics control room on site.

Largest of the two suites is the main control room. This has been equipped with an 8.85 metre wide oval-shaped SteelBase central control desk with 19 desk bays. Each bay incorporates three monitor display mounts (two in front, one overhead). Low-level storage units for computer equipment are incorporated at the mid-left section of the desk.

Positioned around the main desk are eight additional desk units from the Custom Consoles SteelBase Lite series. Four of these each provide workspace for six operators positioned as positioned as two rows of three individuals facing a central monitor display frame. The fifth desk is an in-line configuration designed for use by three operators. Desks six and seven are dual-operator inline and the eighth is a single-operator workstation. Like the central SteelBase desk, each SteelBase Lite operator position incorporates three monitor display mounts.

For the LHC cryogenics control room, Custom Consoles has designed and produced a 10.5 metre wide inline SteelBase Lite desk designed for simultaneous use for nine operators plus a separate 2.54 metre wide dual operator desk, with similar styling and facilities to the main control room desks. Additional furniture supplied include a 2.4 x 1 metre oval desk for each control room.

All desks in the project have Marmoleum finished worktops, light grey side panels and light grey access doors.

Custom Consoles has been chosen for the evident robustness of its furniture and its ability to meet CERNs exact requirements with regard to standard-range desks, comments CERNs LHCb Project Manager Bernard Chadaj. In addition, Custom Consoles understands the detailed issues involved in accommodating technical equipment and its cabling within confined spaces, ensuring good ventilation and stable overhead monitor support.

We were naturally very pleased to have been selected to work for such a high-profile client, adds Custom Consoles Sales Manager Gary Fuller. We have installed both suites of furniture pending final incorporation of computer equipment, monitor displays and cabling. Each of the two monitor immediately behind the desktop is mounted on an Ergotron support which allows operators to adjust the screen angle to match their personal preference.

SteelBase is a range of high-durability technical desks which can be configured to provide an ergonomically efficient working environment for any size of control room. SteelBase desks are built of high-grade MDF on 19 inch steel base frames with powder-coated textured-grey vertical panels.

SteelBase desktops are surfaced in a choice of hard-wearing laminate or marmoleum. Additional design features of the range include hinged removable access doors, 19 inch equipment racking, sliding equipment trays, heavy cable management, PC sliding mounts, power distribution and data panels, and variable-speed ventilation fans.

SteelBase desks can be specified for single or multi operator environments. Worktops can be rectangular or curved, including angled or curved corners and optional curved-front-profile side panels. All elements of the desks are guaranteed against component failure for five years of normal use. SteelBase has been tested by FIRA and certified to conform to ISO9241 part 5, ISO11064 Part 4, EN527 Part 1, 2 and 3.

Steelbase-Lite is a compact and cost-efficient variant which can be delivered in flat-pack form for easy assembly by the customer or by on-site installers. Each unit incorporates a PC storage base with two hinged removable access doors at front and rear. All doors have ventilation ports running almost the full height.

Each SteelBase-Lite desk unit is equipped with cable management ducts plus easy cable access from the computer housing via a brush strip running the full width of the worktop. Adjacent to this is a video display support frame with two VESA monitor mounts which attach to height-adjustable horizontal aluminium-frame beams. Robust steel arms and profiled legs integrated with the main desk unit give SteelBase-Lite very high strength and rigidity.

CERN (www.home.cern), the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, operates the worlds largest particle physics laboratory. Its physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the worlds largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter - the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. This process provides clues about how the particles interact as well as insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

The instruments used at CERN are purpose-built particle accelerators and detectors. Accelerators boost beams of particles to high energies. The particles are then made to collide with each other or with stationary targets. Detectors observe and record the results of these collisions.

The LHCb experiment is one of seven large particle physics detector experiments collecting data at the Large Hadron Collider accelerator at CERN. LHCb is a specialised b-physics experiment measuring the parameters of CP violation in the interactions of B-hadrons (heavy particles containing a bottom quark). Such studies can help to explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe and reveal new physics. The detector is also able to perform measurements of production cross sections and electroweak physics in the forward region.
