Decidedly different

As you might have heard, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is all about variety. Our November line-up includes such classics as the hilarious THE LADY EVE, with Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda; GILDA, starring Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford in the ultimate film-noir; 9 TO 5, with Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton putting their unforgettably sassy spin on office politics; and COAL MINERS DAUGHTER, starring Sissy Spacek in her Oscar-winning performance as country-music superstar Loretta Lynn.

We also love foreign films. On Nov. 22, the Kalamazoo Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is proud to present BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR, the controversial, widely acclaimed French drama from director Abdellatif Kechiche. The film explores the evolving relationship of high school student Ad le (Ad le Exarchopoulos) and the slightly older, more worldly artist Emma (L a Seydoux), whose blue-tinted hair and cryptic smile lead Ad le on a journey of self-discovery. From the moment when Ad le first catches sight of Emma, on a busy crosswalk, the movie restores your faith in the power of the coup de foudre and yet redoubles your fear of its effect; love, like lightning, can both illuminate and scorch, wrote critic Anthony Lane in The New Yorker. RedEye critic Matt Pais called the film a love story that is ultimately and brilliantly about differing expectations for personal and creative fulfillment, and the tragic, sometimes-sensible resignation of second-best. The chances of 19-year-old Adele Exarchopoulos earning an Oscar nomination for a controversial foreign film are even slimmer than when Michael Fassbender was snubbed for Shame, and what a shame: She's nothing short of extraordinary.

Any anime fans in the house? Were screening the landmark science-fiction epic AKIRA at 8 p.m. Nov. 26, in honor of its 25th anniversary. Baltimore Sun critic Stephen Hunter called it a blast and a half, a twisted dystopian parable of violence and rock and roll, Japanese-style. Its Disney on PCP, mean, rotten, psychotic, but incredibly vivid.

Those who follow Drafthouse Films will be pleased to know weve booked the mind-bending1979 thriller THE VISITOR for Dec. 6 and the 1981 Abel Ferrara-directed shocker MS. 45 for Dec. 13. Tickets will go on sale for these titles at the end of November.
