SMPTE announces 04 Honorees and Award winners

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) has revealed the outstanding industry members who will be recognised 23 October at the SMPTE 2014 Honors & Awards Ceremony.

Honorary Membership in the Society recognises individuals who have performed eminent service in the advancement of engineering in motion pictures, television, or in the allied arts and sciences.

This year, SMPTE will honour George Lucas (pictured) with its highest accolade. Best known as a writer, director, and producer, Lucas is also a pioneer in the adoption of new technologies for motion picture production and exhibition. He founded Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) in 1975, which has gone on to produce VFX for nearly 300 films, and invented the OpenEXR file format in 2000 to support HDR imaging.

Leonardo Chiariglione will also be awarded Honorary membership. Chiariglione is generally considered to be the driving force behind the development of the MPEG set of standards, and founded the International Standards Organization (ISO) Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) group.

John Logie Baird (1888-1946) will be inducted into the SMPTE Honor Roll in recognition of his lifelong contributions as a pioneer in television technology.

SMPTE will also present awards including the Progress Medal to Ioan Allen; the Archival Technology Medal to Neil Beagrie; the David Sarnoff Medal to Clyde D. Smith Jr; and the Digital Processing Medal to Barry Haskell. The Citation for Outstanding Service to the Society will be conferred upon by five SMPTE members.
