See TFF 0 Alumni at Rooftop Films Summer Series

Spend your summer with Rooftop Films and check out The Genius of Marian,' 'Bending Steel' and Cutie and the Boxer under the stars.

We're partnering with Rootfop Films' acclaimed Summer Series to bring three of some of the most talked about documentaries of TFF 2013 to the outdoor big screen in three different boroughs! The program specializes in sharing the best of underground and independent cinema with New York film lovers, complete with drinks and the occasional live musical performance.

We couldn't think of a more perfect venue to share three great TFF alumni films with the masses. The Genius of Marian and Bending Steel are both free to the public while audiences will have to purchase a ticket to see Cutie and the Boxer well before its theatrical release. In this moving personal narrative, filmmaker Banker White turns his camera on two generations of women in his family. His mother, Pam, knows she is slowly succumbing to Alzheimer's disease and frantically launches a project dedicated to keeping the legacy of her own mother, Marian, alive. Marian was an celebrated artist who also succumbed to Alzheimer's. Seamlessly moving back and forth between the past and present, the film details the lives of both women in a powerful exploration of motherhood, chronic illness and the legacies we leave behind.

There's no better place to watch Bending Steel than on the beach at Coney Island. Enamored by the tradition of the Coney Island Strongmen, Chris Wonder Schoeck, sets his sights on joining a mix of living legends and up-and-comers who seek to excel at a throwback sport bending steel. Director Dave Carroll's moving documentary follows the lovable, modest Schoeck as he attempts to turn his extraordinary strength into a stage career, despite his own battles with crippling shyness and stage fright.

Using boxing gloves and frequently his Mohawk as a paintbrush, Ushio Shinohara exploded onto the 1970s New York art scene. During this career peak he met and fell in love with Noriko, an art student who later became his wife. Throughout their 40 years of marriage, Ushio's work has garnered acclaim but no real financial gain. The couple struggles to pay the rent even decades later, and Ushio seems stuck in a cycle of repeating his old work while Noriko and her work evolve as she creates new paintings centered on her autobiographical characters named Cutie and Bullie.
