Over its closing weekend the 2015 Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) will feature the premiere of TV mini-series Nadya by Zanzibari director and photographer Shams Bhanji which screens on 25 July at ZanCinema at 11h00; and Andy Jones I Shot Bi Kidude which screens at 19h15 on 26 July at the Old Fort Amphitheatre. Nadya is a dramatic look at Zanzibari society caught between traditional values and women empowerment. I Shot Bi Kidude is a follow up to As Old as my Tongue, Jones biographical documentary on this legendary Zanzibari artist. These are two of a number of films which have had world premieres at ZIFF 2015.

Ebele Okoye s beautiful animated tale, The Legacy of Rubies, which was supported by the Goethe Institute Dar Es Salaam, had its world premiere on 20 July and was met with an incredible response from the crowd inside the full-house at the Old Fort Amphitheatre. Okoye was in attendance at the event and was thrilled at the response. The film was produced with a primarily African team hand selected by Okoye who is very active in encouraging Africans to enter animation and filmmaking. Nightrunners, a thriller set on a remote Kenyan island, had its world premiere on 22 July. The Canadian and Kenyan production teams including director/ writer Rowan Nielssen and Kenyan Producer Fostine Odhiambo along with male lead, Kenyan actor Neville Msati all attended the premiere which was especially scheduled to take place in Zanzibar. Director Nielssen explained, We had the option to premiere the film here in Zanzibar or at the Toronto International Film Festival and we specifically chose to have it here at ZIFF. The film used mainly locals in the production and works closely with a charity in Kenya, The Little Stars Foundation. For more information visit the Nightrunners website.
