LGBTQI history dates back all the way to the 1950s. Today, there are plenty of queer documentaries to watch on several different topics including transgender people, LGBTQI people in the entertainment industry and iconic figures who have had a big role in the queer activism.

Here are five educational documentaries on LGBTQI topics.

1. PARIS IS BURNING' The 1990 documentary, Paris Is Burning, is one of the most popular LGBTQI documentaries. The award-winning doccie looks at ballroom culture in New York and follows several houses including the House of Xtravaganza, which also features in Pose.

2. DISCLOSURE' South African-born actress Charlize Theron has said Netflix's Disclosure is a must-watch . The documentary directed by Sam Feder and produced by Orange is the New Black actress Laverne Cox explores the lives of transgender people in the entertainment industry. Cox has previously said that her life is a profound example of what representation can do.

Trans people have experienced unprecedented levels of violence and this legislative assault in state legislatures and on a federal level that is unprecedented, she told The Guardian.

3. THE DEATH AND LIFE OF MARSHA P. JOHNSON' American activist Marsha P. Johnson has been described as the Rosa Parks of the LGBT movement . The Netflix documentary, The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson, directed by Oscar nominee David France, explores her suspicious death in 1992. Johnson was found dead on the Hudson River shore.

4. EQUAL' Narrated by award-winning actor Billy Porter, Equal is a four-part documentary series that looks at the stories of iconic LGBTQI figures who have been at the forefront of the queer movement. The HBO Max-produced project stars Samira Wiley, Anthony Rapp, Cheyenne Jackson, Heather Matarazzo and more.

5. PRAY AWAY' Pray Away is a 2021 documentary where former leaders of a conversion therapy programme speak out about their heartbreaking experiences. The documentary also features a survivor who tells their story in detail.
