April's solar eclipse is predicted for the first half of 2024, and this could be one of the rarest sky-events that happens the whole year. But what's up with the eclipse, and will South Africans be able to catch a glimpse of this rare cosmic event?

After all, a total solar eclipse isn't something you get to see every day - or every decade!
Here's everything you should know about the predicted event, and why it's worth marking out on the calendar while doing the rest of the planning for the year.

April's solar eclipse: everything to know According to the website Time and Date, the solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024.
That's still some time in the future, but this is so rare that many people mark their eclipse events months or years ahead - and it's just to make sure that you don't miss it!
A total solar eclipse (like in April) happens when the rays from the sun are blocked from view, which could cast the Earth into darkness - at least for a while.

April's solar eclipse: can we see it from SA? According to Time and Date, the solar eclipse will be visible from parts of the United States and Canada, though might not be visible from South Africa.

The good news is that many platforms (like YouTube and NASA) will have live streaming available of the event: if you want to see it, there's no need for anyone to look into the sun.

April's event will not be visible for South Africans, unless they're seeing it via an online stream - or from another part of the world.
