The audio industry's love affair with vacuum tubes (or valves as they are known in the UK) is likely never to end - in fact, there are probably more audio manufacturers using valves today than there were when SOS was founded. Even in the sleepy English countryside, there are suppliers and even manufacturers capable of supplying tube equipment companies in sufficient quantities for their needs. And now there is another.

Phaedrus Audio, a Kent-based manufacturer known for designing valve-based audio equipment like the Phusion channel strip, the Phamulus compressor, and the Hydra mic preamp, all of which have been reviewed in SOS over the past few years, have begun offering modern emulations of classic tubes for precision audio applications. Their Gold Dot Supertubes are designed, as Phaedrus put it, to model the top one percent of tubes of any particular type , and thus faithfully reproduce the performance of the best of the best of the original vacuum tubes . The first Supertube to be released is Phaedrus's 6072M Gold Dot, which is modelled on GE's Five Star 6072 tubes, as used in AKG and ELA(M) microphones.
