Carte Blanche returns to your screens tonight for a closer look at some of the hottest topics this week.
Highlights include the rising reports of animal cruelty in South Africa, as well as the lessons we can learn from Portugal's war on drugs and the new legislation regarding cable theft.
Here is what to look forward to on tonight's show.
Wild animal in cages The cruelty reports of late include everything from malnutrition and abuse to keeping wild animals in confined spaces. The focus is on zoos this week, and the team investigates how municipalities struggle to manage the care and facilitation of wild animals.
It's been an contentious issues in the news since the start of the year. Viewers will recall that the East London Zoo and Buffalo City Metro Municipality came under fire back in January. The story went viral when photos of two elderly bears trapped in a concrete pit were shared online.
The team will discuss if keeping wild animals in zoos is ethical and will give viewers a better idea of the state of South Africa's zoos. A poll on Twitter suggests that nearly 90% of the SA population believe zoos aren't ethical.

Decriminalising drug use and lessons from Portugal Portugal has one of the most progressive drug policies in the world, following a harrowing period in the eighties and nineties when the country was overrun by drugs.
Back then, the crisis began in the south, with Olh o known as one of the drug capitals of the Europe. HIV infection spread and ignorance around drug use didn't help. Then in 2001, Portugal became the first country to decriminalise the possession and consumption of illicit substances.
The drug crisis stabilised, HIV infection rates dropped, as did the overdose deaths rates and drug-related crime statistics. The Carte Blanche team investigates if there are any lessons we can learn from Portugal's fight against drug abuse.

Cable theft and sabotage Back in September 2018, 33-year-old Heideveld resident Abraham Terblanche was slapped with a 15-year prison sentence when stolen property was found in his possession.
The spate of cable theft incidents and sabotage to essential infrastructure has an adverse impact on the country, especially on communication networks. Carte Blanche's Claire Mawisa tackles the hot topic on this week's episode and discusses how new legislation introduces punishment that finally fits the crime.
