Much-praised TV series Gaby Estrella wraps its first season

December marked the end of shooting for the first season of pay-channel Gloob s first telenovela for kids, Gaby Estrella, which has been airing since October 14, Monday to Friday, at 8pm. Production of the first 52 episodes had support from Rio Film Commission.

The series tells the story of Gaby (played by newcomer Mait Padilha), a big city girl who has to adapt to the quiet life in a small town. There she makes new friends and discovers a talent for music she didn t know she had.

Since it premiered, the series has been collecting kudos for its cast filled with up-and-coming talent as well as for its simple and finely-built story. Our understanding is that dramaturgy is an important means of communication with kids, they identify with the characters and the plot. Through stories we have the possibility of introducing the real world, but in a fun, light way that connects with the kids imagination , says Paula Taborda dos Guaranys, the channel s content manager. Gaby Estrella is a product developed to have Gloob s DNA, it s not an adaptation, it is patently Brazilian. The repercussion has been great, we ve gotten very positive feedback through our website and in the social networks , she adds, before saying that a second season is under consideration, though no dates have been given.

Episodes for the first season were shot in the capital city of Rio de Janeiro and in Barra do Pira , in the state s M dio Para ba region. We needed a place with colonial-period architecture to give the series an air or reality. Because of its exteriors which were ideal for country scenes and its front (which stands in for the Estrella Farm), Hotel Fazenda Arvoredo, in Barra do Pira , has been used as a location for Gaby Estrella. Because it has a lake, a corral and a pen it made it easy for us to shoot , recalls Paula.

Later, as shooting progressed, we searched for a location in the city of Rio that could stand in for the countryside, so we found a little farm alongside Avenida Brasil, the capital s busiest highway. Sets were built at Sociedade Nacional de Agricultura, in the Penha district. The series school is also in Penha and the set design department was careful to reproduce the simplicity of small town schools, with little technology, with tables and chairs all in line, with a blackboard and chalk sticks , the manager continues, mentioning the locations were found by producer Lalo Caetano.

As for the RFC s support since production began, in June 2013, Paula Taborda dos Guaranys has nothing but praise. Rio Film Commission s role was key in bringing us together with Rio s Audiovisual Hub and with Barra do Pira s City Hall. It made the whole production easier, from location scouting to community relations. When it was time to shoot in Leme, in Rio de Janeiro, the RFC helped us with permits from City Hall for some of the exterior scenes .
