Surfboards for a Shared Planet

GoPro's heritage is deeply rooted in surfing and it is still a passion that many GoPro employees pursue. We are stoked to see how people, companies and initiatives in the surf industry are adopting new methods of board making that are more environmentally friendly.

Nothing beats the feeling of a new board beneath the feet. But it feels even better when you know that board is making a difference.

Follow along as shooter and editor, Erik Derman tells the story of few of these individuals that are making a difference.

Coby Peterson, third generation of the family-run Marko Foam, is helping by evangelizing the benefits of recycled foam to create stronger and more environmentally friendly blanks for surfboards.

Brothers, Desi and Rey Banatao of Entropy Resins are developers of Super Sap, a bio-based epoxy resin that replaces the extremely toxic resins that are used to glass most surfboards. Not only are the traditional resins bad for the environment but they are extremely hazardous to work with.

Jake Moss of Eco-Flex, has been solely focused for the last four years on refining and perfecting the process in which more environmentally materials are used to make surfboards. As a shaper, Jake knows how important it is to have materials that are not only better for the planet but also better for the board.

The Eco-Flex process uses recycled blanks from Marko Foam and Super Sap from Entropy Resin in a Gold-Standard, third party certified, sustainable workshop environment and associated sustainable business practices, a domestic supply chain to produce boards made up of a a minimum of 60% plant-based and recycled waste stream materials. The end result produces surfboards that are 75% cleaner, 30 % lighter and last twice as long as traditional PU constructed surfboards.

From recycling a piece of trash to building a better board - a small change makes a big difference.
