THE SCREEN PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA CALLS ON INDUSTRY TO UNITE

The Screen Producers Association of Australias Executive Director, Matthew Deaner, will today address the Jobs, Dollars, Hearts and Minds conference in Canberra. The presentation highlights the ongoing importance of screen businesses uniting and campaigning to maximise commercial opportunities to ensure sustained industrial growth.
"Today we welcome the release of long awaited industry data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. These results, the first since 2006/07, are a signpost to help ensure that we are moving in the right direction. It includes invaluable insights about evolving business characteristics amid a period of unprecedented change, from expanding distribution models to the introduction of the Producer Offset and Screen Australia," said Deaner.
Screen Australia's inaugural policy conference coincides with two further events hosted by the screen production community under the associations banner: A Parliamentarian Breakfast and an Industrial Forum both to be held on Wednesday the 19th of June in Parliament House. Each discussion will bring together a diverse range of industry and political leaders to reframe and advance some of the unresolved policy issues from the last couple of years ahead of what will be a very important election outcome.
While the connection between government settings and industry growth are well established, and the subject of continual public debate, less attention is paid to the connections between industrial settings and industry growth. This is partly because in the main, industry itself sets its own employment terms and conditions, intellectual property practices, and terms of trade, continued Deaner.
We have moved from an environment of media scarcity to one of abundance. The way in which we make, sell, distribute, screen, and purchase content must be viewed holistically with strong leadership across many facets of industry, from maintaining strong copyright protections to flexible agreements and commercial terms to responsive government intervention, concluded Deaner.
Tomorrows Australian Screen Stories Annual Breakfast hosted by SPAA will be moderated by Sky News David Speers and will involve a policy Q&A between Minister for the Arts, Tony Burke and Shadow Minister for the Arts, Senator George Brandis followed by a discussion about the creative and business processes behind successful screen content with the creators of Rake (Ian Collie and Andrew Knight) and The Checkout (Craig Reucassel and Nick Murray).
