Conviva aims to disrupt and empower

Conviva, an OTT video optimisation specialist, is on a mission to empower its customers through data driven intelligence, according to the company's CEO and co-founder Hui Zhang (pictured).

Speaking at an event at the company's London premises on 12 June, Zhang used the analogy of Uber on several occasions to describe Conviva's disruptive technology in the online video sector.

The fundamental principle behind Conviva is that we're coming from the same disruptive technology that Uber is trying to use to drive their car business or how Amazon is driving their business. We're using data realtime and making decisions all in a closed loop and in a predictive way, Zhang explained.

Conviva's vision is a data driven intelligence platform, said Zhang. In the media space we want to enable the HBOs, Skys, ESPNs of the world to compete with new competitors like Netflix. Netflix is the disruptor and comes armed with this technology.

Conviva measures sensors in every video player and has deployed 1 billion active sensors around the world. For every stream that plays through that player we collect the most granular quality of experience parameters so we know what the playback experience is. That's all then sent back to the central intelligence, he explained.

Zhang gave an example of how Conviva can help a company to make huge business decisions. For instance, if a US-based company wanted to expand into Europe, what kind of data would it be looking for? What are the network conditions? What is the device penetration rate? What is the playback quality on certain devices? He highlighted the importance of data driven intelligence as frequently and as fast as you can.

Zhang added: We're using powerful new technology including realtime big data processing to drive this fundamental change in the net TV industry. We want to empower players to adapt to this brave new world and level the playing field.

According to Ian Franklyn, managing director EMEA for Conviva, the company's next step is to provide realtime intelligence across the networks to help operational teams in multi-system operators (MSOs) and telcos to augment data from their traditional monitoring and probing services with realtime video data.
