Oasys rolls out COM interface across geotechnical software range

Call for Oasys users to tell us which data objects should be added to the quick-access library The Oasys software development team is adding COM (Component Object Modelling) interface across its geotechnical software range. Using the new interface is seamless for Oasys users, with instructions and samples built into the user manuals. COM allows you to access external data instantaneously, and to pass data objects to and from Oasys software and external programs, including Excel and MATLAB.

Improving interoperability between the software you use The latest software release to include the interface is PDisp for predicting soil displacement due to load: version 19.4 was released in May 2018. The interface is already available in Greta and Frew for retaining wall analysis and Alp for laterally-loaded pile analysis.

An initial library of data objects, such as a one-click Get Phi command has been created, but Oasys is calling on practicing geotechnical engineers to feedback information on other objects they would find useful.

The development of the COM interface for geotechnical software was originally prompted by a practical challenge facing an Arup team working on a project for a large steeply-sloping site. The project involved retaining walls of different heights in varying geology, and the team could see the practical advantages of having an off the shelf' L section that they could update and add to the evolving 3D site model. The addition of a COM interface in Greta enabled them to link Oasys Greta and Excel to do just this.
