A whitepaper aiming at realization of End-to-End Network Slicing is published by KDDI led taskforce in GSMA

Tokyo, June 25, 2021 KDDI led the GSMA [

1] taskforce working on documentation of a whitepaper aiming at realization of End-to-End (E2E) [

2] Network Slicing, as an editor, in collaboration with major telecom operators and equipment vendors. The whitepaper became publicly available on June 3rd, 2021, on

the GSMA website.

This whitepaper describes the vision of E2E Network Slicing, the technologies to be utilized, and the status of related standardization work in each organization. It is expected that this whitepaper will accelerate the realization of E2E network slicing by facilitating sharing of issues and consensus formation on what need to be studied among many relevant companies.

In conventional network deployments, it is necessary to build individual physical networks according to the requirements of the services, and it is difficult to build a tailored physical network for each 5G service such as XR and IoT, which has a wide range of service quality to be required.

E2E network slicing is a technology that divides the physical network into multiple virtualized networks in a 5G standalone network (5G SA) [

3] and tailors each of them according to service requirements. It enables the provision of tailored network capabilities for each purpose of use, such as factory automation in the manufacturing industry, or autonomous driving, which leads to services that require low latency and high reliability.

On the other hand, as E2E network slicing is a technology spanning over multiple mobile network components, including core networks and base stations, it is a challenge for multiple standardization organizations and industry groups to study it in an integrated manner, and the whitepaper addresses this challenge. KDDI has been working on E2E network slicing [

4], and will continue to promote technology demonstrations, including standardization, through this white paper.

The GSMA represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, uniting more than 750 operators with almost 400 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem, including handset and device makers, software companies, equipment providers and internet companies, as well as organizations in adjacent industry sectors.
