When Apple founder Steve Jobs returned to the company after several years in exile, he held a meeting. To the shock of board members, he walked up to a wall listing two dozen products and began removing them, one by one, until there were just four left. Yep, four.
In business, even a small one like yours, staying focused means clearing away the clutter-the clutter of paper-based and digital data, and the clutter of tasks that someone else should take on. That's why delegating information management to a trusted partner rather than going it alone is a critical lesson in leading a business to success.
But don't take it from me-take it from Jobs, who understood that in order to save Apple, he would have to steer it back to its core competency: creating beautifully designed products that people can operate almost intuitively. (After all, could you imagine Apple shredding its own paper?) People think focus means saying yes to the thing you've got to focus on, Jobs would say years later. But that's not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas.
How to Delegate the Small Stuff
You've probably already hired an accountant to handle your company's taxes and a lawyer to draft your articles of incorporation, but there are probably still a hundred other important tasks that can and should be delegated to employees and partners. Like those piles of paper cluttering up every corner of the office, for example. They're not only a nuisance; they could also be a little scary if you've lost track of what exactly lives there.
As your company grows, you won't have time to worry about directing how or where important documents are stored-you'll only know when you need them at your fingertips. Indeed, your company's success may depend on your ability to delegate these tasks to employees and third-party providers that can sort, organize, store and dispose of hard copy and digital documents securely.
