Romulus expands its empire to more than 40 territories pre-launch

21 October 2020 - As the Rome Film Festival readies for the Italian premiere of Romulus this Friday, ITV Studios has made further pre-sales of the epic, pre-Rome drama taking the total number of territories in which it will be available to 44, with several more deals in final negotiations.

Cattleya, part of ITV Studios, Sky and Groenlandia's ambitious, archaic Latin drama has been acquired by Deutsche Telekom for its MagentaTV OTT service in Germany, MoreTV in Russia and CIS, and Cosmote in Greece.

Romulus was also acquired by SBS for Australia and HBO Europe in February this year. It will launch on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in Italy on 6 November.

Imbued with history, myth and revolution, Romulus is set in the eighth century BC, along the banks of the Tiber, where a primitive and brutal world exists and a man's fate is decided by the merciless power of nature and the gods. Romulus is the story of this world as seen through the eyes of three people marked by death, loneliness and violence. As these men and women learn how to shape their own destinies instead of passively suffering the whims of fate, a ferocious and protective female figure leads the formation of a new society - laying the foundations for one of the greatest Empires ever.

The series was created, directed and produced by Matteo Rovere, making his debut as director of a TV project. The ten episodes filmed in archaic Latin by Rovere alongside with Michele Alhaique and Enrico Maria Artale, tell the story of a brutal world as seen through the eyes of the three protagonists: Andrea Arcangeli (Trust, The Startup), playing Yemos, prince of Alba, Marianna Fontana (Indivisible) playing the vestal Ilia, and Francesco Di Napoli (Piranhas), playing Wiros, a young orphan and a slave. Screenwriters include Filippo Gravino, Guido Iuculano and Matteo Rovere.
