Serra das Almas Wins the Second Netflix Award at the S o Paulo International Film Festival

S o Paulo, October 30, 2024 - Today, on the closing night of the 48th S o Paulo International Film Festival, Netflix has proclaimed the film Serra das Almas the winner of the second Netflix Award. Directed by Pernambuco native L rio Ferreira, the feature was chosen among the films competing in the 48th S o Paulo International Film Festival and will stream on Netflix in over 190 countries as of a date yet to be announced.

The award selects and acquires the distribution rights of a Brazilian fiction film participating in the S o Paulo International Film Festival provided it has not yet had its licensing rights negotiated with any streaming platform. The jury, composed of Gabriel Gurman, Netflixs director of films in Brazil and Fl via Guerra, a journalist and documentary filmmaker specialized in cinema, are on the lookout for innovative productions that highlight diversity.

"In partnership with the Festival, it brings us great joy to announce the winner of the second Netflix Award. This award not only reaffirms our commitment to Brazilian cinema, it offers an opportunity for audiences all over the world to be moved by our countrys creative talent," said Gabriel Gurman.

Serra das Almas is set in Pernambuco, where a jewel heist brings together a group of misfits who are old friends - with catastrophic results. Watched over by ghosts from their past, each one of them will have to find their own path to freedom. The film is co-produced by Carnaval Filmes and Urso Filmes.

The Serra das Almas team is thrilled about the possibility of their film being viewed in 190 countries. "What a pleasure it is for us to bring our film to the entire world. With subtitles! And joy! said director L rio Ferreira.
