Clairmont Camera Invests In Varicam 5 Camera/recorders

The equipment is immediately available to clients of Clairmont's five offices in Hollywood, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Albuquerque. NM.

Company president Denny Clairmont, renowned for his hands-on knowledge of professional cameras, had handled Panasonic's original tape-based VariCams, and was impressed with early VariCam 35 footage he saw shot by cinematographers Suny Behar and Theo Van de Sande ASC.

Clairmont noted that as a native 4K camera, the VariCam 35 is well-positioned to meet the requirements of streaming providers such as Netflix and Amazon that are stipulating true 4K production, as well as the needs of traditional networks that are interested in current 4K production for residual 4K airings.

This is a very well-made camera with many distinctive features: dual native ISOs 5000/800, simultaneous recording of three video formats (4K 2K Proxy, or UHD HD Proxy), 14 stops of latitude, internal ND filters and two-piece modular design, Clairmont said. The VariCam 35's detachable control panel enhances overall system maneuverability, and the OLED viewfinder is the best EVF we've seen on a digital camera.

The in-camera color grading, facilitating on-set live grading while leaving the 4K master untouched, is a real asset, he added.
