The Animation School ranks in top 18 animation schools worldwide --

South African specialist tertiary institution The Animation School (TAS) ranked 18th in this year s prestigious Animation Career Review list of top animation schools. This is a substantial jump up from their 31st placing last year, and a result that puts them ahead of many older schools including Paris s Cr apole, London s Royal College of Art, and Max the Mutt and Seneca, both in Toronto.

Schools are surveyed across a number of criteria, including facilities, quality of graduate animation works, proximity to studio hubs, and tuition costs.

Principal Nuno Martins attributes the school s improved placement to their recent and on-going collaborations with international consultants and education partners. We place a great deal of weight on our ability to adapt to feedback, he says. Our relationship with (former Dreamworks animator and feature-film director) Alexandre Heboyan, for example, has really added value to our curriculum and our understanding of animation production, especially as far as story is concerned.

In 2016, the school also instituted a knowledge exchange partnership with Emile Cohl in Lyon. The French 2D and traditional drawing specialist school will benefit from The Animation School s 3D expertise while The Animation School will benefit from Emile Cohl s three decades of experience in art education. This has been another big shift in emphasis for us, explains Martins. Although we will remain a 3D school, we want our students to develop a more solid foundation in the art and craft of animation. Partnerships of this kind will benefit both staff and students.

The Animation School s strategy is certainly paying off: 2016 was a bumper year for the school in terms of awards and accolades, culminating in an official selection for third-year film, ARID, in the Graduation Film category at the Annecy International Festival of Animation.

2016 will be hard to top, but this new ranking is a great way to start the year, says Martins.

Retaining its first place in the rankings is the grande dame of animation schools, Paris s Gobelins l Ecole de l Image, with whom The Animation School has enjoyed a fruitful partnership over the last few years.
