Ultimate Point Source monitor family gains new larger and dual-woofer models

Loudspeaker manufacturers Genelec announced three additions to The Ones family of point-source active reference monitors in a launch at London's Metropolis Studios earlier this afternoon (September 5th). As regular readers will recall, the original One was the 8351A reviewed in SOS August 2015, later joined by the 8341A and 8331A at the most affordable end of the range (see the July 2017 SOS review). The new speakers all employ the same innovative underlying design concept as the previous Ones, featuring a cleverly conceived combined coaxial tweeter and mid-range driver set in a waveguide occupying the whole front face of the monitors, and equally original LF drivers concealed behind the waveguide.

Now there's a larger model at the top end of the family, which Genelec claim offers the same high dynamic range, wide, consistent dispersion and optimal imaging, but with higher maximum output. The three-way coaxial 8361A is designed for small to medium environments, with a listening distance of up to five metres, and features newly designed twin woofers and coaxial high frequency and mid range drivers. The original 8351A has also been redesigned with improved electronics derived from those of the 8341A and the new drivers used in the 8361A. According to Genelec, the new 8351B produces higher SPLs and a better high frequency response than the 8351A. Finally, the W371A is a free standing 1100mm tall dual-woofer speaker designed to complement the top three models of the series - that is, the 8341A, 8351B and 8361A, for which it can also act as a stand - and provide smoother and more coherent bass imaging. Genelec were at pains to point out that the W371A shouldnt be considered a simple supporting subwoofer in the usual sense of the word, and indeed its clear that a lot of engineering effort has gone into it. One woofer is located on the front face of the cabinet, the other on the rear, allowing a lot of flexibility when it comes to LF dispersion, and it produces frequencies well above the common range of a standard sub.

As with the existing Ones, the new models work with Genelec's GLM room correction software and can form part of mono, stereo or higher-count speaker systems. No UK or US dollar pricing was available at the launch for the new Ones, but the Euro pricing had been fixed at 4140 for the 8351B, 4920 for the 8361A, and 9120 for the W371A. Prices are quoted per speaker and including VAT at the UK rate of 20 percent.
