Lord Chandos appointed omson Foundation chairman

Lord Chandos, who has more than 25 years' experience of advising the media industry, has been appointed chairman of the Thomson Foundation, the long-established international media development agency.

He takes over from Lord Fowler, who has stood down after five years in the role but remains involved with the foundation as a patron, along with Lord Howe, the former chancellor of the exchequer and foreign secretary.

Tom Chandos has been chair of the Esm e Fairbairn Foundation, one of the UKs largest grant making foundations, for the past six years, stepping down at the end of this month. He has worked as an adviser, investor or board member in the UK and international media industry over the past 25 years.

He is currently chairman of two listed companies in the real estate sector, as well as being on the board of a number of private companies, including an independent television production company.

He has been a member of the House of Lords since 1982, first as an hereditary and, since 2000, as a life peer.

Tom Chandos said: I am excited about the prospect of helping to steer the foundation into a new age where more people, than ever before, want to find a strong voice through media.

The Thomson Foundation was established 50 years ago by media entrepreneur Lord Roy Thomson. It is an independent and non-political organisation which has trained tens of thousands of journalists and media workers in more than 100 countries.
