According to the website Time and Date, the first full moon for January is happening soon - and there's less than a week left if you want to watch the moon emerging for the beginnings of the year.

The first moon for January announces the rest of the year, and it's called the Wolf Moon due to the fact that it's associated with wolves at their height of activity.

Even though South Africa doesn't naturally have grey wolves, this reference is used to remember this month's special lunar event.

Here's everything to know about the January 2024 moon, and what's in store for the rest of the year.

If you want to see the lunar event, make sure that you're looking up on 6 January, 2024. It's the first full moon for the year, called the wolf moon due to the fact that wolves are at their busiest during this time of the year.

This is the first lunar event of its kind, so it's not something that you want to miss!

January's FULL MOON: The Wolf Moon Each moon for the year receives its own special name, which reminds of something special that this part of the year (and lunar cycle) is remembered for.

According to the website Moon Giant, the Wolf Moon happens during January - and yes, the name is still used for Africa even though the Timber Wolf doesn't naturally occur here!

The February Full Moon January only marks out the first lunar event for the year, and there's still more to look forward to for South africa skywatchers.

February's full moon is happening on the last day of next month, the 29th.

This makes it a special type of moon, called the Snow Moon.

Other events for the year Readers can also look forward to seeing a solar eclipse (or a live online stream of it!) later this year, which will be happening in April.

Whlie the eclipse can be seen from North America and parts of the United States, anyone in South Africa will have to watch this special event through a streaming platform (e.g. NASA) to catch a good look.
