A Maraon Challenge in Singapore

The live coverage of any marathon is a feat for all concerned, whether contestant, organiser or broadcaster, and none more so than the challenging Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore held in December each year. With buildings, parks and various other signal-blocking obstacles to negotiate, and with three starting points in different locations, Presteigne Charter invested in Link and Gigawave equipment for seven cameras.

The contribution feeds were sent back to the main decoding site at the Padang via a Gigawave MVL-HD2 system which provided a long-distance DVB-S2 high bandwidth line-of-sight link, designed to be used for outgoing routes or connecting remote sites. Utilising the 7GHz band with user selectable 10, 20 or 30MHz bandwidth options, data rates up to 89.18Mbit/s were possible, with the link providing the ability to pass up to 99 ASI encoded services. An ASI Multiplexing card was included to internally multiplex from five different sources. The inbuilt encoder and decoder HD/SD card included Analogue and AES audio; and the Triax connection, to remote transmit and receive heads including heavy duty tripods, enabled optimum positioning and reliability in the heat, wet weather and accompanying humidity.

With four Link L2084 Transport Stream Managers especially purchased for the event, Presteigne Charter had, at their disposal an ultra configurable Stream Manager used for managing routing of IP and ASI Transport Streams.

Ten licences were purchased to enable all of Presteigne Charters inventory of Link L1500 transmitters and L2174 Receivers to utilise Deep Interleaving technology a wide time buffer to accommodate short interruptions in signal such as when passing buildings or trees.
