Nihon Sekkei and Autodesk Delivering Next-Generation BIM in Japan

August 5, 2015 - For the past year, Nihon Sekkei, Inc. and Autodesk, Inc. have partnered to advance building information modeling (BIM) in Japan. The companies are jointly developing a system for construction and building management to maximize the benefits of BIM for facility owners and throughout building lifecycles. The companies have announced the results of the first-year partnership and their future plans.

Nihon Sekkei and Autodesk have developed an integrated BIM system to satisfy the need in Japan for BIM workflows that use building lifecycle information. They have been creating a unified platform based on Autodesk Revit to enable the following:

Information can be used uniformly in architectural, construction and facility-design workflows, streamlining operational coordination between these workflows;

In addition to the creation of 3D models, it is now possible to visualize and confirm the performance and specifications of structures, to help project teams share their understanding of these models;

For facility design, data can now be shared seamlessly between domestic design software, fluid analysis software and accounting systems, thereby enhancing design quality;

As a result of revising the standards for design drawings to enable extended use of this information, workflows have been created to use these drawings at design and construction sites;

Autodesk Dynamo has been deployed to automate facility design using algorithms, and also to optimize design lifecycle costs; and

A plan is in place to deploy standardized information in operations and maintenance going forward.

Future Plans

The two companies will validate the use of their Integrated BIM system throughout building lifecycles, from initial consulting and design to operation and management. The aim is to provide facility owners and users with a value-added system for construction and building management in Japan.

In addition, as part of establishing workflows that can be deployed globally, personnel and technical exchanges will be conducted not only between the two companies, but also with foreign companies and educational institutions operating at the forefront of BIM. Also, the two companies will continue to exchange information and technology proactively, aiming to share their achievements openly with industry players.
