University Work Conference Held in Ningbo

Universities Work Conference of Ningbo was held on the afternoon of April 13. Yu Hongyi, Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee at the meeting stressed that the citys colleges and universities should grasp the new situation and new tasks with innovation and pragmatism, and strive to create a new situation in the development of higher education in the city so as to make new contributions to the realization of the Two Basics and the building of Four Good Demonstration Areas. The conference was hosted by Wan Yawei, Member of the Party Committee, Vice Mayor, and Minister of Municipal Propaganda Department. Zhang Minghua, Vice Mayor, attended the meeting.

Over the last ten odd years, Ningbo has achieved considerable development in higher education, its number of universities having increased from 3 in 1998 to 15, and its enrollment rate having climbed from 8.8% to 57% with nearly 160,000 students being full-time students. As a result, we have basically founded a diversified, service-oriented, and well-featured education system, giving strong support for the economic and social development of Ningbo.

After fully affirming the achievements in the development of higher education in our city, Yu Hongyi pointed out that the current economic development has entered the stage of new normal, and so has higher education. Yu stressed that universities In Ningbo should emancipate the mind, build consensus, profoundly grasp the relationship between higher education and the modern city, conduct a joint study of higher education development plan to accelerate the the connotative development of higher education, and more effectively serve the economic and social development of Ningbo

Yu Hongyi demanded that colleges and universities of Ningbo should take the Thirteenth Five-year Plan as an opportunity, clarify the development direction of innovation, highlight the adaptability, support and guidance of urban modernization of higher education services, optimize the positioning in the of universities layout, individuality and disciplines. To deepen the reform of institutional mechanisms to force, the comprehensive advantages of the city striving connotative development of higher education. We should regard a system focused on deepening education reform as the driving force and take the advantage of connotative development. Universities should promote the humanities building as the starting point, vigorously carry on the socialist core values, and focus on cultivating college students innovative spirit, the rule of law and sound thinking personality so as to lay a solid foundation for the lifelong development of university students.

At the conference, municipal leaders participated in the certificate-awarding ceremony for seven coordination and innovation centres, including the Coordination and Innovation Centre of Non-linear Maritime and Atmospheric Disaster System of Ningbo University, set up by universities in Ningbo. People concerned in six universities, including Zhejiang Wanli University, delivered speeches.
