Getting Naked with Steve Murg

Having tried in vain for many years to find a life drawing class that would sit happily with Post Production working hours; last week I finally succeeded.

Obviously I haven't been looking hard enough because the rather snappily titled Holborn Life Drawing & Covent Garden Life Drawing' has been around for a whole 2 years now and as the name suggests is in fact two classes, both untutored. The Covent Garden session is held every Thursday at 7pm and the Holborn session is every Tuesday at the slightly more ambitious time of 6.30pm (one can dream).

Both sessions are drop in/pay as you go at £12 a pop and remarkably, they also tolerate lateness. Latecomers welcome' they cheerily state in their blurb. Now, I hate being late for anything but if I'm going to be realistic and if I'm going to be turning up, then I'm probably going to be late, but not on my first night. So, at an overly keen 6.45pm, feeling both excited and a little nervous I presented myself at the venue. Two models appeared soon after, a woman in her fifties and a man in his sixties. Dave, the sole occupant and organiser, addressed the group and explained that we'd have a series of 2 minute poses, two 20 minute poses and would finish with one lasting 40 minutes.

The models were good and held their poses well, although they weren't particularly tricky. Not having done any life drawing for nearly 20 years, this was probably a good thing. My efforts weren't great but I was just pleased to have started again. I would recommend the sessions to anyone; whether you're wanting to get back into it' or are looking to try for the first time. Don't drink the tea at half time (it is without a doubt the worse I've ever tasted) but do go for a drink in the pub afterwards about half the group does and they're a nice bunch.
